About Pressure Measurement
Pressure is the force applied perpendicular to a surface per unit area. It's measured in various units depending on the application and region. The SI unit is the Pascal (Pa), defined as one Newton per square meter.
Common Pressure Units
Bar: Commonly used in meteorology and engineering. Standard atmospheric pressure is approximately 1 bar.
PSI: Pounds per square inch, used primarily in the United States for tire pressure, hydraulics, and gas cylinders.
mmHg/Torr: Used in medicine (blood pressure) and vacuum technology. Named after Torricelli, inventor of the barometer.
Atmosphere (atm): Defined as the pressure at sea level at 0°C, used as a reference standard.
Absolute vs Gauge Pressure
This converter deals with absolute pressure values. In practice, many pressure gauges show "gauge pressure" (pressure relative to atmospheric pressure). For example, a tire gauge showing 32 PSI actually means 32 PSI above atmospheric pressure, or about 46.7 PSI absolute.
